Tile flooring works beautifully throughout Arizona homes—from kitchen remodeling projects to bathroom remodeling applications to whole-home flooring installations. Our tile installation expertise extends from shower tile to expansive living areas requiring precise layout and leveling.

Why Professional Tile Flooring Installation Matters

Tile floors appear straightforward to install—mix thinset, lay tiles, apply grout, done. But professional installation involves critical preparation and techniques that determine whether your floors perform beautifully for decades or fail within years.

What Can Go Wrong with Improper Installation

We’ve seen countless tile floor failures from DIY projects and budget contractors:

Tiles cracking due to inadequate subfloor preparation
Lippage (uneven edges) creating tripping hazards and unprofessional appearance
Hollow spots under tiles leading to breakage
Foundation cracks telegraphing through tile
Grout cracking and crumbling prematurely
Tiles loosening or debonding from floor
Uneven surfaces that collect dirt and moisture
Pattern misalignment that looks amateurish
Complete floor replacement needed within 3-7 years

These failures almost always trace back to shortcuts in preparation, inadequate crack isolation, improper thinset application, or lack of professional leveling systems.

What Professional Installation Provides

Professional tile flooring installation ensures:

Thorough subfloor inspection and flatness verification
Laticrete Strata Mat for crack isolation and superior bonding surface
Crack membrane over concrete cracks to prevent crack transfer
Correct thinset selection for tile size and type
Proper notch trowel size for full coverage
Back buttering every tile for complete adhesion
Raimondi leveling system for zero lippage
Premium tiles from Arizona Tile
Professional-grade grout that doesn’t require sealing
Clean transitions and finishing details
Warranty protection for materials and installation

The difference between professional and amateur tile installation becomes obvious over time—professional installations maintain their appearance and integrity for decades while amateur work fails within years.

Tile Flooring Options for East Valley Homes

Arizona’s climate and lifestyle create specific considerations for flooring materials. We specialize in porcelain tile flooring that performs exceptionally in our desert environment.

Large Format Tile

Large format tiles (12×24 inches, 24×24 inches, 24×48 inches, or larger) have become the most popular choice for modern Arizona homes.

Benefits of Large Format Tile:

Fewer grout lines create cleaner, more contemporary appearance
Less grout means easier maintenance and cleaning
Modern aesthetic that makes spaces feel larger
Available in stunning colors and patterns
Dramatic visual impact with minimal interruption
Works beautifully for whole-home installations

Installation Requirements for Large Format Tile:

Large format tiles demand extremely flat subfloors—any imperfection telegraphs through large tiles far more obviously than with smaller formats. We verify subfloor flatness to strict tolerances (typically within 1/8 inch over 10 feet) and use Laticrete Strata Mat to create the perfect bonding surface.

Large tiles also require:

Proper trowel size for tile dimensions (typically 1/2″ x 1/2″ notch minimum)
Complete thinset coverage with no voids
Back buttering for 100% adhesion
Raimondi tile leveling system on every installation
Proper support during initial set

We install large format tiles throughout East Valley homes in living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, and whole-home applications.

Wood Plank Tile

Wood-look porcelain tiles combine the warm appearance of hardwood with the durability and waterproof performance of porcelain.

Why Wood Plank Tile Works Perfectly in Arizona:

100% waterproof—handles spills, humidity, and wet areas
Temperature stable—won’t expand/contract with Arizona heat
Scratch resistant—stands up to pets, kids, and daily wear
No refinishing needed—maintains appearance for decades
Comfortable underfoot—warmer feel than traditional tile
Realistic appearance—modern manufacturing creates convincing wood grain

Wood Plank Tile Sizes and Patterns:

Common sizes: 6×36 inches, 8×48 inches, 9×48 inches, 12×48 inches
Installation patterns: Random set, straight lay, offset (brick pattern), herringbone, chevron
Grout color matching: Coordinated to wood tone for seamless look

Wood plank tiles install beautifully in any room including bathrooms and kitchens where real hardwood would be problematic. Many East Valley homeowners choose wood plank tile for whole-home installations that flow seamlessly through every space.

Pattern Installation Options

Beyond standard straight-lay installations, we create stunning pattern layouts:

Random Set Pattern (Wood Plank Tiles):
Tiles offset at varying intervals creating natural, organic flow
Mimics authentic hardwood flooring installation
More natural appearance than strict brick pattern
Less repetitive, flows more naturally through spaces
Popular choice for wood plank tile installations

Herringbone Pattern:
Tiles meet at 90-degree angles in classic zigzag pattern
Requires precise 45-degree cuts at tile ends
Creates sophisticated, high-end appearance
Popular for wood plank tiles and rectangular formats
Adds visual interest without overwhelming space

Chevron Pattern:
Similar to herringbone but tiles are cut at angles for continuous V-pattern
Creates dynamic directional flow
More complex than herringbone (tiles must be cut before installation)
Dramatic visual impact

Offset/Brick Pattern:
Tiles offset by 1/3 or 1/2 for classic brick-laying appearance
Works with rectangular tiles and wood plank formats
Timeless pattern that never goes out of style

Straight Stack:
Tiles aligned in grid pattern
Modern, clean appearance
Emphasizes tile size and minimizes grout lines

Diagonal Layout:
Tiles installed at 45-degree angle to walls
Makes rooms appear larger
Requires more cuts but creates sophisticated look

Pattern installations require additional labor for cutting, planning, and precise execution—but the visual impact makes them worth the investment.

Traditional Tile Formats

Beyond large format and wood plank options, we install various tile formats for specific design goals:

12×12 inch tile: Classic size, versatile for any space
18×18 inch tile: Larger than traditional without extreme format
12×24 inch tile: Rectangular format with modern proportions
Hexagon tile: Geometric interest for feature areas
Patterned tile: Decorative options for entryways or accents

Tile Finish Options

Tile finish affects both appearance and performance:

Matte finish: Non-slip surface, hides water spots, contemporary appearance
Polished finish: Glossy appearance, shows water spots, can be slippery when wet
Textured finish: Added slip resistance, masks imperfections
Natural stone look: Realistic stone appearance in durable porcelain

For Arizona homes, we typically recommend matte or textured finishes for living areas and definitely for bathrooms and kitchens where slip resistance matters.

Premium Materials Make the Difference

Arizona Tile: Premium Porcelain Products

We source our tile flooring materials primarily from Arizona Tile, a trusted supplier offering premium porcelain tiles with superior quality and performance characteristics.

Why Arizona Tile Products:

Premium porcelain construction—denser and more durable than budget tiles
Consistent sizing and thickness—critical for professional installation
Rectified edges for minimal grout joints
Realistic patterns and textures
Wide selection of sizes, colors, and styles
Proven performance in Arizona conditions
Local availability for project efficiency

Quality tiles cost slightly more than big-box budget options, but the difference in durability, appearance, and long-term performance makes premium tiles the only choice for installations we stand behind.

Laticrete Strata Mat: For Wood Subfloors and Optional Upgrade

Laticrete Strata Mat is an uncoupling and crack isolation membrane that we use on wood subfloors and offer as an optional upgrade for concrete slabs.

What Is Strata Mat?

Strata Mat is a professional membrane that provides:

Uncoupling—allows substrate and tile to move independently
Crack isolation—prevents substrate cracks from transferring to tile
Superior bonding surface for thinset
Load distribution across larger area
Waterproofing protection
Sound dampening

When We Use Strata Mat:

Wood Subfloors (Standard): All wood subfloor installations receive Strata Mat installed directly to the wood using premium thinset application. Wood subfloors have more flex and movement than concrete—Strata Mat provides essential uncoupling and crack isolation for these installations. No cement board is required when using Strata Mat on wood subfloors.

Concrete Slabs (Optional Upgrade): For concrete slab installations, Strata Mat can be added as an optional upgrade for additional crack isolation and uncoupling protection. Many homeowners choose this upgrade for added peace of mind, particularly in areas with known foundation issues.

Concrete Crack Protection (Standard): When foundation cracks are discovered in concrete slabs, we address them with 12-inch crack isolation membrane directly over the crack—not Strata Mat over the entire floor. This targeted approach provides excellent crack protection without the cost of full Strata Mat coverage.

Why This Approach Makes Sense:

Wood subfloors need uncoupling protection (flex and movement)
Concrete slabs are more stable than wood subfloors
Crack membrane handles individual cracks effectively
Strata Mat available as upgrade for concrete if desired
Cost-effective protection appropriate to substrate type

We discuss Strata Mat options during consultation and include wood subfloor Strata Mat or optional concrete slab Strata Mat upgrades in detailed estimates.

Crack Isolation Membrane for Foundation Cracks

When concrete slabs have visible cracks, we install crack isolation membrane to prevent crack movement from transferring to tile.

Crack Membrane Application:

12-inch wide by 25-foot roll membrane
Installed directly over cleaned crack
Prevents crack movement from destroying tile above
Provides excellent protection without full floor coverage
Essential for concrete with existing crack damage
Cost-effective solution targeted to problem areas

Foundation cracks in Arizona homes are common due to expansive clay soils and settlement. Crack isolation membrane prevents these cracks from destroying tile floors as cracks widen or move over time.

This targeted approach addresses the specific problem area rather than covering the entire floor—providing excellent protection at reasonable cost.

Professional-Grade Grout That Never Needs Sealing

We exclusively use premium grout systems that resist mold and staining while never requiring sealing—a significant advantage over traditional cement-based grouts.

Premium Grout Benefits:

Mold resistant—inhibits mold and mildew growth
Stain resistant—won’t absorb spills or discolor
No sealing required—ever
Consistent color that doesn’t fade
Easier to clean and maintain
Superior long-term performance
Available in wide color selection

Traditional cement-based grouts absorb moisture and stains, require annual sealing, and gradually deteriorate over time. Our premium grout systems eliminate these issues entirely, providing maintenance-free performance for the life of your floor.

The Raimondi Tile Leveling System

We use the Raimondi tile leveling system on every tile floor installation to ensure perfectly flat surfaces with zero lippage between tiles.

What Is Lippage?

Lippage occurs when adjacent tiles sit at slightly different heights, creating uneven edges. Even small amounts of lippage (1/16 inch or less) create:

Tripping hazards, especially for seniors
Unprofessional appearance
Areas that catch dirt and are difficult to clean
Premature grout cracking at height transitions
Reduced long-term durability

How the Raimondi System Works:

Clips are placed under tiles during installation
Wedges are inserted into clips
Wedges apply even pressure across adjacent tiles
Tiles are held perfectly flat while thinset cures
Clips break away after thinset sets
Result: Perfectly level floor with consistent grout joints

The Raimondi system is particularly critical for large format tiles where even small imperfections become obvious. This professional-grade leveling system adds labor time and cost but delivers factory-like finish quality that lasts.

Professional Tile Flooring Installation Process

Our tile installation process follows proven steps that ensure long-term performance:

Baseboard Removal and Reinstallation

Professional tile flooring installation requires proper handling of baseboards for best results:

We Recommend Baseboard Removal:

Baseboards should be removed before tile installation for the cleanest, most professional finish. This allows tile to extend fully to the wall with proper expansion gap, then baseboards reinstall over the tile edge for a finished appearance.

Options We Offer:

Remove and reinstall existing baseboards: We carefully remove your existing baseboards, install tile with proper wall spacing, then reinstall the same baseboards over the tile edge. This works well if baseboards are in good condition.

Remove and replace with new baseboards: If existing baseboards are damaged, outdated, or won’t survive removal, we can replace them with new baseboards after tile installation. This creates a fresh, updated look.

Tile to existing baseboards: While possible, tiling up to existing baseboards without removal creates a less finished appearance. The tile edge shows at the baseboard, caulk lines are visible, and the overall look is not as clean or professional. We don’t recommend this approach.

Why Removal Provides Better Results:

Tile extends completely to wall with proper expansion gap
Baseboards cover tile edge for clean, finished appearance
No visible tile edge or caulk line
Professional look that matches new construction standards
Easier to clean (no gap between tile and baseboard to collect dirt)

We discuss baseboard options during consultation and include removal/reinstallation or replacement in our detailed estimates.

Step 1: Subfloor Inspection and Preparation

Tile flooring is only as good as the surface beneath it. We thoroughly inspect and prepare subfloors before any tile installation:

Concrete Slab Subfloors:

Inspect for cracks, damage, or moisture issues
Document all existing cracks for crack membrane application
Verify flatness within tolerances (typically 1/8″ over 10 feet)
Clean surface thoroughly (no oil, paint, or contaminants)
Identify unlevel areas requiring correction
Grind high spots if necessary
Apply moisture barrier if moisture testing indicates need

Self-Leveling Compound for Unlevel Floors:

When concrete slabs have low spots, dips, or uneven areas beyond acceptable tolerances, we use professional-grade self-leveling compound to create a flat surface:

Assessment of unlevel areas with straightedge and level
Priming of concrete surface for proper adhesion
Mixing self-leveling compound to manufacturer specifications
Pouring and spreading compound to fill low areas
Allowing proper cure time (typically 24-48 hours)
Verification of flatness before proceeding with Strata Mat

Self-leveling compound is essential for large format tile installations where any imperfection telegraphs through the tile. Unlevel subfloors cannot be detected until existing flooring is removed, making this an unforeseen condition requiring additional materials and labor.

Wood Subfloors:

Verify structural integrity and proper support
Check for squeaks or movement (must be corrected)
Secure all loose boards
Verify flatness after repairs
Address any moisture concerns
Clean surface thoroughly for proper thinset adhesion

For wood subfloors, Strata Mat is installed directly to the wood using premium thinset—no cement board required. This provides essential uncoupling and crack isolation while creating superior bonding surface for tile.

Proper subfloor preparation takes significant time but determines whether your tile floor lasts or fails. We never rush this critical phase.

Important: Unforeseen Conditions and Change Orders

Certain subfloor conditions cannot be detected until existing flooring is removed. These unforeseen conditions require additional materials and labor beyond the original estimate:

Crack Isolation Membrane: Foundation cracks are not visible until flooring removal. When discovered, 12-inch crack isolation membrane is required to prevent crack movement from destroying tile. This unforeseen condition requires a change order for additional materials and labor.

Self-Leveling Compound: Unlevel concrete (beyond acceptable tolerances) cannot be assessed until existing flooring is removed. When floor leveling is required, self-leveling compound and additional labor are needed to create a flat surface suitable for tile. This unforeseen condition requires a change order for materials and installation labor.

We document all unforeseen conditions with photos and provide detailed change order pricing before proceeding with additional work. These conditions are discovered during the project, not during initial consultation, and represent additional scope beyond the original estimate.

Step 2: Crack Isolation Membrane (Unforeseen Condition – Concrete Slabs)

Foundation cracks in concrete slabs are not visible until existing flooring is removed. When discovered during demolition, we install crack isolation membrane:

Document crack location and severity with photos
Provide change order for crack membrane materials and labor
Upon approval, clean crack and surrounding area thoroughly
Cut 12-inch wide membrane to length
Apply thin layer of thinset over crack
Embed membrane in thinset
Smooth out any wrinkles or air pockets
Allow proper cure time before proceeding with tile installation

This targeted protection prevents crack movement from destroying tile as foundation settles or moves. Crack membrane is a change order item—not included in base estimates because cracks cannot be detected until flooring removal.

Step 3: Laticrete Strata Mat Installation (Wood Subfloors or Optional Upgrade)

For wood subfloor installations or concrete slabs with optional Strata Mat upgrade:

Roll out Strata Mat to plan layout and minimize waste
Cut Strata Mat to fit around obstacles and walls
Apply premium thinset with flat trowel
Press Strata Mat firmly into thinset
Ensure complete contact with no air pockets
Butt edges together (no overlap)
Allow proper cure time (typically 24 hours)
Verify flatness before tile installation

Wood Subfloors: Strata Mat is installed directly to the wood subfloor using premium thinset application. No cement board is required—Strata Mat provides both the waterproof substrate and uncoupling membrane in one system.

Concrete Slabs: Strata Mat can be added as an optional upgrade for additional crack isolation and uncoupling protection. We tile directly over properly prepared concrete without Strata Mat unless the upgrade is selected.

When Strata Mat is used, it provides excellent uncoupling, crack isolation, and superior bonding surface for the tile installation.

Step 4: Layout Planning

Before setting any tile, we plan the complete layout:

Determine starting point for balanced appearance
Plan for centered pattern in main areas
Minimize small cuts at edges and transitions
Account for floor drains if present
Plan pattern direction for wood plank tiles (or herringbone/chevron patterns)
Coordinate with doorways and transitions to other rooms
Mark reference lines for straight installation

Proper layout planning ensures your finished floor looks intentional and professional rather than improvised.

Step 5: Thinset Selection and Mixing

We select appropriate thinset for your specific tile and application:

Large format tiles require large-and-heavy-tile thinset
Modified thinset for most applications over Strata Mat
Correct water-to-powder ratio for proper consistency
Mixed with professional mixing paddle for even consistency
Fresh batches mixed as needed (thinset has limited working time)

Different tiles and applications require different thinset formulations—using the wrong product compromises bond strength and long-term performance.

Step 6: Proper Trowel Application

Thinset application technique directly affects tile adhesion:

Notch Trowel Selection:

We select trowel size based on tile dimensions:

  • Small tiles (under 8×8): 1/4″ x 1/4″ square notch
  • Medium tiles (8×8 to 15×15): 1/4″ x 3/8″ square notch
  • Large format tiles (over 15×15): 1/2″ x 1/2″ square notch or larger
  • Extra large tiles (24×48+): 3/4″ x 3/4″ square notch

Wrong trowel size prevents proper thinset coverage, creating hollow spots that lead to cracked tiles.

Application Technique:

Thinset applied to prepared surface in sections (Strata Mat if used, or directly on concrete)
Trowel held at consistent angle (45 degrees)
Notches create consistent ridges
Coverage maintained without dried thinset
Fresh thinset for optimal bond strength

Step 7: Back Buttering Every Tile

Back buttering means applying thinset to the back of each tile in addition to the floor—a critical step that many contractors skip to save time.

Why We Back Butter Every Tile:

Ensures 100% thinset coverage under every tile
Eliminates hollow spots that cause cracking
Creates maximum bond strength
Prevents future tiles loosening or debonding
Industry best practice for large format tiles
Required for warranty coverage on premium tiles

Back buttering adds labor time but the cost of skipping this step—cracked or loose tiles requiring replacement—far exceeds the installation time investment.

Step 8: Raimondi Leveling System Installation

As each tile is set, we install Raimondi leveling clips and wedges:

Clips placed at tile corners/edges during setting
Tiles pressed into thinset with proper pressure
Wedges inserted into clips
Wedges tightened to apply even pressure
Adjacent tiles held perfectly flat
Leveling maintained throughout thinset cure
Clips broken away after 24 hours

This system ensures every tile sits at exactly the same height as its neighbors, creating perfectly flat floors with consistent grout joints.

Step 9: Pattern Execution

For wood plank tiles or patterned installations, we execute layouts with precision:

Random Set Pattern (Wood Plank Tiles):
Tiles offset at varying intervals for natural, organic appearance
Flows more naturally than strict brick pattern
Mimics real hardwood flooring installation
Creates less repetitive, more authentic look
Popular choice for wood plank tile installations

Straight Lay Pattern:
Tiles run parallel to walls, offset like brick pattern
Works for all tile formats

Herringbone Pattern:
Tiles meet at 90-degree angles in zigzag pattern
Requires precise 45-degree cuts at tile ends
Popular for wood plank tiles and rectangular formats

Chevron Pattern:
Tiles cut at angles for continuous V-pattern
More complex requiring angled cuts before installation

Diagonal Pattern:
Tiles installed at 45-degree angle to walls
Creates visual interest and makes spaces feel larger

Pattern installations require additional labor for cutting and planning but create stunning visual interest.

Step 10: Tile Cutting and Edge Details

Professional installations require clean, precise cuts:

Wet saw with diamond blade for straight cuts
Angle cuts for patterns or diagonal installations
Outlet and register cuts with proper clearances
Door jamb undercuts for proper tile fit
Transition planning to other flooring types

Clean cuts indicate professional work. Jagged edges covered with excessive caulk indicate rushed or amateur installation.

Step 11: Premium Grout Application

After tile sets for 24-48 hours, we apply premium grout:

Grout Color Selection:

Matching grout: Blends with tile for seamless appearance
Contrasting grout: Highlights pattern and tile shape
Gray or neutral: Works with most tile colors
Coordinated with tile color and homeowner preference

Grout Application Process:

Grout mixed to proper consistency
Applied with grout float at diagonal angle
Forced into joints completely
Excess removed without pulling from joints
Cleaned with damp sponge after initial set
Polished once grout firms
Final haze removal

Our premium grout systems provide mold resistance, stain resistance, and never require sealing—significant advantages over traditional cement-based grouts that need annual resealing.

Step 12: Caulking, Transitions, and Baseboard Reinstallation

Final details complete the installation:

Caulk at walls (allows for expansion)
Reinstall baseboards over tile edge (if removed) or install new baseboards
Caulk between baseboard and tile if needed for clean appearance
Transition strips at doorways
Reducers between different floor heights
T-moldings between same-height floors
Thresholds at exterior doors

Proper baseboard reinstallation and transitions create finished appearance and prevent tile edges from chipping.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tile Flooring Installation

How long does tile flooring installation take?

Timeline depends on scope and pattern complexity. Single room installations take 5-7 days. Whole home tile takes 4-5 weeks. Pattern installations (herringbone/chevron) add 1-2 days per room. All timelines include proper cure time for Strata Mat, thinset, and grout.

Can you install new tile over existing tile?

Generally no. Existing tile may have adhesion issues, adding tile height creates transition problems, and we can’t inspect the subfloor for damage or prepare it properly with Strata Mat. Removing existing tile allows proper preparation and ensures long-term performance.

What is Strata Mat and when do you use it?

Laticrete Strata Mat is an uncoupling and crack isolation membrane. We use it on all wood subfloor installations, applying it directly to the wood using premium thinset—no cement board required. Wood subfloors have flex and movement that requires uncoupling protection. For concrete slab installations, Strata Mat can be added as an optional upgrade for additional crack isolation and uncoupling, though properly prepared concrete without Strata Mat performs excellently. Foundation cracks in concrete are addressed with targeted 12-inch crack isolation membrane rather than full Strata Mat coverage—providing excellent protection at reasonable cost.

Do I need crack membrane if I have foundation cracks?

Yes. When we discover visible cracks in concrete during flooring removal, we install 12-inch wide crack isolation membrane directly over the crack. This targeted protection prevents crack movement from transferring to tile even if cracks widen over time. Crack membrane provides excellent protection at reasonable cost by addressing the specific problem area rather than covering the entire floor.

What is the Raimondi leveling system?

Raimondi is a professional tile leveling system that uses clips and wedges to hold adjacent tiles perfectly flat during thinset cure. This eliminates lippage (uneven edges between tiles) and creates factory-like finish quality. We use it on every tile floor installation.

Why do you back butter every tile?

Back buttering ensures 100% thinset coverage under each tile, eliminating hollow spots that cause cracking. Many contractors skip this step to save time, but hollow spots lead to broken tiles. We back butter every tile for maximum bond strength and long-term durability.

Does your grout really never need sealing?

Yes. Our premium grout systems resist mold and staining without any sealing—ever. Traditional cement-based grouts require annual sealing because they’re porous. Our grout eliminates this maintenance requirement entirely while providing superior stain and mold resistance.

Can you install tile in patterns like herringbone?

Absolutely. We install herringbone, chevron, diagonal, and other pattern layouts. Pattern installations require more time for cutting and precision but create stunning visual impact. We’ll show you pattern options during consultation.

What tile is best for Arizona homes?

Porcelain tile from Arizona Tile. Porcelain is denser and more durable than ceramic, handles temperature extremes, and performs beautifully in our climate. We source from Arizona Tile for consistent quality, realistic patterns, and local availability.

How long before I can walk on new tile floors?

Light foot traffic after 24 hours, normal use after 48-72 hours (grout needs curing time). Heavy furniture should wait 7 days. We provide specific guidelines based on your installation.

Do you install tile flooring during kitchen or bathroom remodels?

Yes. Tile flooring is often part of larger remodeling projects. We coordinate tile installation with other work for seamless results. Visit our kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling pages for more information.

Can you match tile to my existing floors in other rooms?

We can often find close matches for discontinued products. For whole-home cohesion, many homeowners choose to install new tile flooring throughout rather than trying to match existing materials, especially if current floors are several years old.

Do you offer warranties on tile flooring installation?

Yes. Our installations include workmanship warranty covering installation quality. Tile materials and grout carry separate manufacturer warranties. Strata Mat and Laticrete products include manufacturer warranties. We provide documentation for all warranties.

What are unforeseen conditions and how do change orders work?

Certain subfloor conditions cannot be detected until existing flooring is removed. Foundation cracks and unlevel concrete are only visible after demolition. When we discover these conditions, we document them with photos and provide a detailed change order for the additional materials and labor required. Common unforeseens include crack isolation membrane for foundation cracks ($1-2 per sq ft) and self-leveling compound for unlevel floors ($2-5 per sq ft). We never proceed with additional work without your approval of the change order pricing.

Should I remove baseboards before tile installation?

Yes, we strongly recommend baseboard removal for the best finished appearance. Removing baseboards allows tile to extend properly to the wall, then baseboards reinstall over the tile edge for a clean, professional look. We offer three options: (1) Remove and reinstall your existing baseboards if they’re in good condition, (2) Remove and replace with new baseboards for an updated look, or (3) Tile to existing baseboards without removal—though this creates a less professional appearance with visible tile edges and caulk lines. We discuss baseboard options during consultation and include removal/reinstallation or replacement costs in our estimates.

Why Choose Mustache Approved for Tile Flooring Installation

Licensed General Contractor (ROC #309760)

As a licensed, bonded, and insured general contractor, we handle complete flooring projects including any subfloor repairs, structural issues, or coordination with other trades. You work with one accountable contractor from start to finish.

Strata Mat for Wood Subfloors

All wood subfloor installations receive Laticrete Strata Mat installed directly to the wood using premium thinset application. Wood subfloors have flex and movement that requires professional uncoupling protection. No cement board is required—Strata Mat serves as both waterproof substrate and uncoupling membrane. Strata Mat is also available as an optional upgrade for concrete slab installations.

Crack Isolation Membrane Protection

When foundation cracks are discovered in concrete slabs during demolition, we install 12-inch crack isolation membrane directly over cracks. This targeted protection prevents crack movement from destroying your tile investment as foundation settles. Arizona’s soil conditions make foundation cracks common—proper crack membrane installation protects your floor.

Raimondi Leveling System

Every tile floor receives professional leveling system installation for perfectly flat surfaces with zero lippage. This system adds labor time but delivers factory-like finish quality impossible to achieve without professional leveling equipment.

Premium Arizona Tile Products

We install quality porcelain tiles from Arizona Tile—not big-box budget materials with inferior construction. Premium tiles combined with professional installation deliver results that last decades.

Back Buttering Every Tile

We never skip this critical step. Back buttering ensures 100% thinset coverage and eliminates hollow spots that cause tile breakage. This industry best practice adds time but prevents future failures.

Premium Grout That Never Needs Sealing

Our professional-grade grout systems resist mold and staining without any sealing requirement—eliminating annual maintenance traditional grout demands. Your grout stays beautiful with simple cleaning.

Proper Trowel Selection and Application

We use correct notch trowel size for your specific tile dimensions and apply thinset at proper angle for complete coverage. Wrong trowel size or poor technique causes hollow spots and future failures.

Pattern Installation Expertise

From herringbone to chevron to diagonal layouts, we execute complex patterns with precision. Pattern installations require additional skill and planning—we deliver professional results that look intentional, not improvised.

Coordination with Other Projects

Tile flooring often connects with bathroom remodels, kitchen remodels, and whole-home renovations. We coordinate flooring installation seamlessly with other work, ensuring proper transitions and timing.

Proven Process

Our 6-step remodeling process ensures clear communication, quality execution, and no surprises from consultation through final walkthrough.

Transparent Pricing

We provide detailed written estimates covering removal, preparation, Strata Mat (included in all installations), materials, installation, and finishing. When unforeseen conditions like foundation cracks or unlevel concrete are discovered during demolition, we document them with photos and provide clear change order pricing before proceeding. No hidden fees or surprise charges—you approve all additional work before we proceed.
