Project Overview

For Britney and Joel’s Mesa home, we reimagined a dated tub-and-shower combo as a bright, open master bathroom built around one generous walk-in shower. The old layout placed a bathtub beneath the window with a separate shower beside it—two cramped zones competing for the same wall space. By removing the tub and combining both footprints, we created a single large shower with room to spare, then carried that same intentional approach across the vanity, storage, lighting, and finishes for a space that feels brand new from floor to ceiling. During the planning stage, a Virtual Showroom 3D design consultation let the homeowners preview their material and layout choices before a single demo cut was made.

The tub-to-shower conversion is the heart of this remodel. In place of the underused tub, we built a spacious walk-in shower with a built-in bench seat and a dedicated drying area, then separated it from the vanity with a custom pony wall to keep splash off the cabinetry. A frameless glass splash panel runs flush to the edge of the pony wall, blocking overspray while leaving the entry open and airy—and it’s designed so a second panel and door could be added down the road if the homeowners ever want a fully enclosed look. Rather than a single curb running the full width, we built a clean step-up, step-down transition that gives the entry a defined break and a more finished feel.

Inside the shower, the walls are dressed in fragment white 12×24 tile from Arizona Tile, with a cool-blend flat pebble stone shower pan that adds natural texture and reliable traction underfoot. We shifted the shower head off-center on the pony wall and slid the panel out toward the edge, a small adjustment that opens up real shoulder room and makes the shower feel noticeably wider. A tall niche with an adjustable 3/8-inch glass shelf—custom-made by our glass company and mounted on a slide bar—lets the homeowners raise or lower storage to fit their needs, while a 12-inch rain head on a 16-inch arm delivers a true overhead shower experience.

In the vanity area, we extended the cabinetry to gain roughly 12 inches of additional storage, then installed a beechwood shaker vanity from Sollid Cabinetry with a new countertop, undermount sinks, and faucets. A large plate mirror was replaced with two individual mirrors, the original lighting was repositioned to suit the longer vanity, and matte black hardware, fixtures, and mirror lighting tie the whole room together. We also added a deep “Johnny cabinet” above the toilet for extra storage, refreshed the room with a new exhaust fan and can lighting, completed paint touch-ups to match, and swapped out the door hardware and hinges throughout the entire house. Why This Design Works for Mesa Homeowners

Across Mesa and the East Valley, tub-to-shower conversions are one of the most requested upgrades we do, and Britney and Joel’s project is a textbook example of why. Most homeowners rarely use the tub in a combined tub-and-shower setup, yet it eats up valuable square footage. By removing the tub and merging both zones into a single large shower with a bench seat and drying area, we gave them a space that’s more comfortable to use every day—and made the room feel dramatically larger without changing the footprint.

The step-up, step-down entry was a deliberate choice over a single full-width curb. It creates a clean visual break at the threshold, makes the transition feel intentional, and helps define where the wet zone begins. Paired with the cool-blend flat pebble stone pan, the entry reads as a designed detail rather than an afterthought, and the pebble surface adds the kind of natural texture and grip that works especially well underfoot in a daily-use shower.

The pony wall is one of our favorite tools for solving two problems at once. Here it separates the shower from the vanity so water stays off the cabinetry, while the frameless glass splash panel runs flush to its edge to contain overspray without boxing in the shower. Sliding the shower head off-center and pushing the panel out toward the edge buys real shoulder room, so the shower feels open rather than tight—and because the design leaves room for a future second panel and door, the homeowners have an easy upgrade path if they ever want a fully enclosed enclosure.

The finishing details are what make this remodel feel custom. Extending the vanity to capture about a foot of extra cabinetry, swapping the single plate mirror for two individual mirrors, and repositioning the lighting created a balanced, functional grooming area for two. The beechwood shaker cabinetry from Sollid pairs warmth with the crisp contrast of matte black hardware, fixtures, and mirror lighting for a look that’s modern but not cold. And practical touches like the deep Johnny cabinet above the toilet, the adjustable glass-shelf niche, and the new exhaust fan and can lighting prove that great bathroom design is as much about everyday function as it is about looks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a drying area in a walk-in shower?

A drying area is a section of the shower, set back from the spray, where you can towel off without dripping water across the bathroom floor. Combined with a built-in bench seat, it adds a functional zone that makes the shower more comfortable and keeps water contained inside the wet area.

Why choose a step-up shower entry instead of a fully curbless design?

A step-up, step-down entry creates a defined threshold at the shower opening, giving the transition a clean, intentional look while still helping contain water. It’s a great middle-ground option for homeowners who want a polished, designed entry rather than a single curb running the full width of the shower. We also build fully curbless showers when that’s the right fit for the space and accessibility needs.

What is a Johnny cabinet?

A Johnny cabinet is a storage cabinet mounted on the wall above the toilet. It turns otherwise unused vertical space into practical storage for towels, toiletries, and supplies. On this project we installed a deeper version to maximize how much it can hold.
