Project Overview
Tom and Rebecca’s Chandler master bathroom had the same layout we see all the time out here in the East Valley—a tub sitting under the window, a separate shower squeezed in beside it, and neither one feeling quite right. They wanted to ditch the tub entirely and turn that combined footprint into one well-designed walk-in shower that actually worked for how they live. We kept the plumbing in its ideal zone, away from the window, and built out a shower that gives them two separate valve stations, generous storage, and a drying area that makes the whole space feel intentional.
The backbone of this tub-to-shower conversion is the custom pony wall. We built it to anchor the shower layout, and mounted the primary shower valve directly on it along with a large built-in niche—plenty of room for shampoo, conditioner, and everything in between. A bench seat runs across the drying area, and robe hooks give them a spot to hang towels right where they need them. On the exterior wall, we roughed in a second, completely independent valve that runs a handheld showerhead in a cradle. Below it, we carved out a foot niche—a small recessed shelf at the right height for propping a leg up while shaving. It’s a simple detail that gets used every single day.
The tile work ties the whole room together. We ran a 12×24 tile on the shower walls in a horizontal straight-lay pattern—a dark gray that reads almost like stone, with subtle variation that adds depth without competing with anything else. The flat pebble stone shower pan adds natural texture underfoot and carries into the back of both niches, so the storage alcoves feel like a deliberate part of the design rather than an afterthought. On the floor outside the shower, we laid the same 12×24 tile but shifted to a 50% offset pattern, breaking up the uniformity just enough to give each zone its own character. We used the Raimondi clip system throughout to keep everything dead flat. The room wrapped up with a fresh coat of paint in a light grayish-blue that ties the two gray tones together—one in the tile, one on the shower walls—and makes the whole bathroom feel cohesive. Why This Design Works for Chandler Homeowners
The tub-beside-the-shower layout is one of the most common setups we encounter throughout Chandler and the broader East Valley, and it’s also one of the most underutilized. Most homeowners tell us they stopped using the tub years ago, yet it consumes a significant portion of the bathroom footprint. Tom and Rebecca’s project is a clear example of what’s possible when you reclaim that space—a single, generous shower that delivers far more functionality than two cramped fixtures ever could.
The dual-valve approach is something we recommend whenever the layout allows for it. Having the primary shower head controlled from the pony wall and the handheld on its own separate valve at the exterior wall means each has independent pressure and temperature control. There’s no juggling—you can run the handheld to rinse off without disrupting the main spray, or use just one at a time without fussing with a diverter. It’s a small upgrade with a real daily impact.
The tile pattern decision deserves a mention too. Running the 12×24 in a straight horizontal lay on the walls gives the shower a clean, modern feel that holds up over time. Switching to a 50% offset on the floor creates a subtle visual break between zones—you register the difference without it feeling busy or disjointed. Same tile, same scale, different rhythm. It’s the kind of detail that makes a remodel feel considered rather than assembled. The pebble stone on the pan and in the backs of both niches reinforces that approach: natural texture where you need grip and warmth, hard lines where you need clean edges.
The light grayish-blue paint was the final connector. With a dark, stone-look gray on the shower walls and a slightly lighter, taupey gray on the tile itself, the room needed something that could bridge the two without competing. The paint does exactly that—it reads as its own color while making both tile tones feel like they belong together.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a foot niche in a shower?
A foot niche is a small recessed shelf built into the shower wall at roughly knee-to-hip height—the right level for propping a foot up comfortably while shaving. It’s a simple detail that gets used every day and doesn’t take up any floor space, making it a great addition to any shower with an exterior wall to work with.
Why would I want two separate shower valves instead of a diverter?
A diverter splits pressure between two outlets, so using both at once means weaker flow from each. Two independent valves mean each fixture—in this case, the main shower head and the handheld—has its own dedicated pressure and temperature control. You can run one, the other, or both without any compromise, and adjusting one doesn’t affect the other.
What’s the difference between a straight-lay and an offset tile pattern?
A straight-lay pattern aligns every tile edge to edge in a grid—clean, modern, and graphic. A 50% offset (also called a staggered or brick pattern) shifts each row so the seams fall at the center of the tile above and below, which softens the look and is often recommended for larger format tiles to avoid a continuous grout line running the full length of the wall or floor. Using both in the same space, as we did here, is a great way to visually distinguish the shower from the surrounding floor.
